I received a weird, ominous sounding email on November 13th. It appears below.

Please note that the multiple uses of typographical emphasis appeared in the email as delivered to me.

Below that is the email in its "original form" as seen by Gmail, which includes coding and header info.

I brushed it aside without responding, but was nagged by doubts that there might be something to it, or, maybe it came from a joker connected with this forum.

Two days later, a twist: Another examiner in my state (NH) informed me that he received the very same email -- about an hour before I got mine.

Please take a look. Maybe you cyber sleuths out there can glean a clue from the header info.

BTW, I've already shared this with Barry C.

Has anyone else received this? Any theories?

Thanks,
Dan

Please reply immediately to this email. There’s some very, very, very serious “blowback” from some polygraph testing that you’ve done in the past. This blowback is of the worst sort. Unless resolved, this blowback will just remain under the radar, wreaking tremendous havoc without you even recognizing the telltale signs. Believe me, the blunt talk here is no exaggeration. I cannot blurt out to you the details since the sensitivity and confidentiality of this matter are so high that special handling is required. It is imperative that you have your attorney email me asap. I will then quickly email him some information that will clarify our need to pursue this matter in this unorthodox manner (i.e., special handling). Things will flow from there. It is imperative that you not fall into the trap of underestimating the severity of this matter, since your attorney will certainly advise you to vigorously pursue this matter. Don’t be concerned about any modest attorney fee or personal effort that attorney involvement might cost you. Why? Because the personal stakes for you and the stakes for your company are just too high. Feel free to read between the lines. In other words, all the claims made here have to be for real and very serious. Otherwise, for obvious reasons, your attorney would be the last person in the world who I would want you to involve. So think it through, think it through—and I say this with all due respect. For said reasons, this cannot be some hoax, scam, prank, crapola, etc. Your attorney will confirm these points. Remember that I will funnel all new information through your attorney, not you, and this is for your benefit. For now I must correspond with you by email. And obviously this matter must be kept under wraps. It would be inappropriate and illegal for any government entity or any party other than your private attorney to insert itself in this matter, and I would surely litigate against any such move. Let me repeat, the blunt talk here is no exaggeration. This mess is as grave and shocking as described, and this mess relates directly to you personally and your company. Please reply immediately to this email, otherwise I probably won’t be able to contact you again due to a variety of issues on my end. Look forward to your timely reply. Thank you.

I am guessing it is from someone who does not speak English well , trying to bait you into helping him transfer funds from his account to yours. The nice guy will of course pay you thousands of dollars to help him.

TV O'Malley and Holli Nioti got the same email. it appears this nut job got onto a list of polygraph examiners and sent it out to all of them. Probably others have or will receive it as well.

A Sheriff's internet crime division has already done some research on this and the emails are originating from Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Do we know anyone who lives there

I was tempted to respond, but did not. Nor have I heard anything more from "Bob Baker," so, no escalation from my vantage point.

BTW...besides the individuals already named here, I know of two more examiners who received the same message.

But what's the endgame with the originator? A shakedown? How could that work? If it isn't about money, what else could he be after?

As I said above, the end game is money. It's clearly a scam to entice you and others to have a law firm contact them. They ultimately try to defraud the attorney...which may not be a crime.... :-) The awkward phrasing of the email ( blunt talk and blowback???) is a dead giveaway that a foreigner typed it and sent it to numerous people who daily interact with lawyers. If 1 out of 1000 emails works, it can be very lucrative for the scammers. See the below article.
